Two Questions About Trump and Republicans that Stump Progressives

Why Are Progressives Stumped?

Progressives often are mystified by the behavior of Trump supporters.  Why would you support something that is going to harm you?  Healthcare is just one obvious example.  Progressives are dumbfounded.  So why are Republicans so eager to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act?  It seems like if they succeed they will put their own constituents at risk for losing health insurance!   This makes absolutely no sense to progressives.

But there is someone who has given it a lot of thought.

Enter George Lakoff

George Lakoff has some ideas and has done a lot of research about this seeming paradox.  In fact he has written a number of books about how we frame our communication based on our often unconscious values.  His books explore how we think, frame, and communicate our beliefs, values and political views.  His thesis is that progressives and conservatives have opposing moral worldviews.  Without understanding the underlying worldview there is no hope of understanding what motivates the political view.  Likewise, once we DO understand another person’s value system, we have a clue to their thinking and actions.

Lakoff believes that “All politics is moral.”

Lakoff retired as Distinguished Professor of Cognitive Science and Linguistics at the University of California at Berkeley.  He is currently the Director of the Center for the Neural Mind & Society (cnms.Berkeley.edu).

Temecula 4th of July – Parade – Thank you for making it a success!!!!!

I would like to publicly thank everyone who participated in the Temecula 4th of July Parade 2017.

It was a long morning out in the heat from 8:45 am to 12 noon and our group was extremely cheerful, patient and resilient.  Even the little ones made it through!   According to my count, we had 35-40 people in our group. That is a FANTASTIC showing!

The parade announcers were very warm, welcoming and enthusiastic, and it was nothing short of a miracle that so many people watching the parade applauded for us, cheered, waved, gave us thumbs up, yelled woot, woot!!!!!   AMAZING!

As we approached the second announcement area, I am sure I heard a female announcer say, “Thank you to the Temecula Valley Democrats for keeping the spirit of democracy alive in our community.”

Temecula Independence Day Parade

Our float in the Temecula 4th of July / Independence Day parade

Independence Day, Temecula Independence-Day-2017_TVDems-03.jpg
Wishing the residents of Temecula Valley a happy Independence Day!

The fourth of July, 2017 is here, and the Temecula Valley Democrats wish all the residents of our region a safe and happy holiday.

Our members and volunteers worked hard to bring a float, banner, and marchers to the parade on a very short time-frame. Hats off to the folk who made this event a resounding success. (And Tami, THANK YOU for the beautiful photos!)

We had roughly forty marchers in the parade today.

As we go to watch the Independence Day fireworks this evening, let us remember the words of Francis Scott Key in our national anthem: “The rockets red glare, the bombs bursting in air, gave proof through the night, that our flag was still there.” The fireworks are a direct symbol of how hard our forebears fought to bring us Independence Day, Temecula.

Our forbears fought for the values of:

  • Equality
  • Life
  • Liberty
  • Freedom of speech
  • Freedom of the press
  • Equal representation under the law
  • Freedom of religion

There are many more values that were represented by the founders of our great Nation, but perhaps one of the most important was for a Nation united, standing together for the common good of everyone.

Those fireworks may be just pretty lights tonight, but in our history, they serve to remind us of the valor, brilliance, and values that make our work-in-progress unique. It is the duty of every generation to preserve those rights and values for future generations.

Many, many people have lived and fought to bring us the rich and storied history we were born into as Citizens of the United States of America. Some may take these words lightly, but they are deeply true. It is up to all of us to make them still true for those who will follow us after we are gone.

Tonight, let’s look up and enjoy the beautiful lights, yet remember why fireworks are such a well-matched symbol of our independence.

Healthcare Update

I know it doesn’t look great to block this attempt by the Republicans to destroy our healthcare. There are several senators who have voiced disapproval. They are:

Heller, Murkowski,Collins,Johnson, Cruz,Lee,Paul and Mcain. Although  on different sides of the issue, we need to contact them all to express our displeasure.

With regards to California”s Healthcare for all, it is now in the assembly- SB 562.

Contact Jim Wood-916-319 2002 and Anthony Rendon- 916 319-2062 to urgw their support.

Respectfully submitted-Steve Schwartz
